| Nutrition and Metabolism Research in Riberao Preto - HIV Speaker: Jackie Monteiro,PhD, Department of Pediatrics Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo, Brazil Sponsored by: Division of Personalized Nutrition and Medicine, NCTR Abstract:HIV infection is recognized as a chronic, manageable illness that requires lifelong therapy. A decrease in the incidence of morbidity and mortality occurred with the emergence of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). However, patients often endure significant side effects, such as lipodystrophy syndrome and oxidative stress. Our research program is studying the nutritional transition that has occurred, its effect on patients with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), and the metabolic and nutritional abnormalities observed in critically ill patients.
